We really need to revise Singapore’s university admissions
i was reading this letter by a reader in The New Paper. it was a response to this recent news on this person getting rejected 4times by NUS but yet got a master’s from Oxford and PhD from Princeton. basically, the letter talks abt how his daughter and brother got rejected by local universities and yet went overseas to study and are holding honours, recieved commendation of high achievement, being associate professor of law.
from the above, it juz shows how screwed up singapore’s university admissions are!
imagine urself in the shoes of those ppl. how will you feel when u get rejected by ur own country’s universities…devastated? hopelessness? happy? well…no sane person will say happy. so when other countries’ universities, probably even those prominient ones, throw u a lifeline and offer u a place, are u going to say no? im sure u will say yes immediately. so how can singapore be blaming ppl for not coming back to singapore after their studies? i mean it is singapore that rejected them in the 1st place and juz when they are successful, u expect them 2 give back 2 a society that shunned them once? i dun think that is how the world goes!
seriously speaking, based on my seniors’ experience, the local universities dun seem to like IB very much. how can this be? if the MOE has approved the IB education system, shouldnt the local universities do something abt it? i know they are currently trying to improve the situation but there are some universities that require bizzare grades such as minimum B and B for EE and TOK! even the prestigious universities overseas dun require that! im sad to say that im really disappointed with our local universities.
anyway…im writing this juz as a reflection. im not trying 2 slam any universities here but i think it is seriously time for us to revise Singapore’s university admissions! maybe this is something our future leaders would really want to look into. this way…we can keep our local talents HERE in singapore and hopefully attract oveaseas talents too!
